Kevin Finnerty / Episode 2 Season 6 / The Sopranos.
I cannot go to sleep if I do not watch something before. I have been that way my entire life. I’m constantly in-between series or movies. I wanna start highlighting some of the best bits weekly.
I should write more, its therapeutic.
Rather than introduce Tony, id assume if you follow me that you know I live and breath the Soprano’s and that Gandolfini is one of my Hero’s. Id say Tony too but I don’t believe I could kill cold blooded. Soprano’s is the greatest creation that has ever braced TV. This is I think my 6th run-through. It set the mark so high that nothing has ever been able to beat it. And that is for many reasons. The acting, the writing, the wardrobe, the music, pretty much everything.
Tony throughout the entire series contemplates whether he will be going to heaven or hell when he dies. He knows his environment will lead to his death, he’s the fucking boss of the New Jersey Mob. From the outside, he is a coldblooded killer. From the show, we know he is a human being just doing his job. He goes to therapy once a week and experiences every emotion a normal human being faces, for one, being depressed for the entire show. Without spoilers, Tony lacked a supportive Mother. Tony a 6ft 1 monster of a person is held down the entire show by his Mother.
Again, without spoilers, ah nah fuck it. Tony ends up getting shot, ill say that. In this episode which at first I never really understood, Tony goes to purgatory. Whilst lying on the hospital bed, almost dying, tony has a spiritual intervention. Tony becomes “Kevin Finnerty” which I assume is Tonys alter life, a “normal” 9-5 working man. Its a parallel universe, one in which Tony is a hardworking honest man who has no struggle with Identity. Tony has lost his wallet and attempts to find it, in the real world, he is struggling to find himself. Tony fights that he is not Kevin, a trait Tony has the entire show, knowing who he really is.
Tony takes a fall down some stairs that he has to take because the lift isn’t working. He is on floor 7, which is the level of Hell that is kept for murderers and criminals. He wakes up to find out he is in hospital now and has been diagnosed with Alzheimers and comes to accept it. which I think links to Tony accepting Uncle Junior has alzheimers and he actually did shoot him without knowing who he was (spoiler, fuck it). Fast forwarding…
Tony/Kevin shows up to a family party and is greeted by his Cousin, Tony Blundetto or “TONY UNCLE AL” (Steve Buscemi). Blundetto invites him inside to see everybody as long as he trades his briefcase. His briefcase symbolises unfinished business in Tonys life which he won’t let go of. He peers into the doorway to see a female figure turn immediately. If you look closely, not in this potato quality video, you can see the female has devil horns. This is Livia his mother waiting for him which is why I know if he went through the door to the family party he would be accepting death and end up in Hell. He’s fucked.
Tony’s initiative kicks in and instead he decides to not give in. But this is where he hear’s his daughter meadow in the trees behind him. Throughout the entire show Meadow is his saving grace, his overlooking angel as it were. And again, she saves him.
Bang, he wakes up.
This scene is up there with the greatest creative writing/acting/creation whatever the fuck I’m saying, ever. Absolutely phenomenal. The entire episode is perfect. Its so complex and beyond any other series I can think of. I probably have got shit wrong, this is up there with one of the most misunderstood episodes in the show.
